Second place in the 2008 Senior Fiddle competition went to Johnny Canning from Glasgow, Scotland, who played the hornpipe: “Garry Kennedy Castle”. The tune was composed by Paddy O’Brien in the key of ‘F’, though Johnny’s setting here is in ‘G’.

From the Senior Fiddle competition we see the playing of Evelyn Healy, Peader O’Connor, Rónán Mac Grianna, Ciara Brennan, Melanie Houton, Shona Ní Fhlatharta and Seámus Mulready, along with Edel Quinn from the Senior Fiddle Slow Air competition.

In ComhaltasLive Programme #275 we had another interpretation of the same hornpipe played by Síofra Nic Aodha from Co. Mayo. In Programme #260, Edel Fox played the same piece on concertina.

Members are: Katie Lawrence, David Kilgallon, Adam Rhodes, fiddles; Rachel Higham and Patrick Knight, flutes; Rebecca Hurst, concertina; Mary Molloy, button accordion; Russell Cowin, double bass; Kirsty Lawrence, piano and John Ryan, drums.

One of the great old multi-part hornpipes, “The Drunken Sailor”, played by concertina player Edel Fox from Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare. Edel was TG4 Young Musician of the Year in 2004 and has toured Britain and North America with Comhaltas.
